PARIS—Roland Garros unveiled a newly-installed Quiet Room for its 2023 edition, promising a relaxing space for players to rest and recharge.

To which Holger Rune said, Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time.

“Yeah, I sleep a lot,” laughed the Dane in his post-match press conference. “I love to sleep. I probably sleep around, I don't know, 9-13 hours if I can.

“It's a lot,” he added as the media dissolved into impressed giggles. “I really like it. I think it's the best recovery that you can have. You know, I actually think the muscle relax, everything relaxes when you sleep, so I try to sleep every time I can.

“Then when I'm awake I'm fully awake, yeah.”

Rune was wide awake for his third-round meeting with Genaro Alberto Olivieri, shaking off the rust from a walkover earned from the previous round to dismiss the Argentine in straight sets and return to the second week for a second straight season.

The 20-year-old was unsurprisingly out for the count when he first got word that opponent Gaël Monfils had withdrawn from the tournament.

“Actually, I was asleep!” he admitted after the 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 win over Olivieri. “I put two-and-a-half hours' practice that day and tried to play like points and a normal set to imitate a real day of match.

“Today I felt good. I felt like I was ready to go, prepared, was still in the match mode.”

All that sleep talk and one couldn’t help but wonder: what exactly does Holger Rune dream about?

“I think we all dream, no?” he asked, channeling a bit of Victoria Justice. “Sometimes about tennis, sometimes not. Can be random things. I don't know.

“Sometimes I have very good dreams that, you know, I stand there with the trophy and stuff, but then when you wake up, you're, like, Oh, shit, I'm just in bed! But then when you actually make the dreams to a reality it feels even better, because then you remember, ‘Oh, that's actually what I dreamt about.’ You know, in this case can be fun.”

Does Rune have what it takes to make his Roland Garros dream come true in about one week’s time?

“Obviously I believe I can,” he said. “But again, I have to play my best tennis, be in my best state of mind to do it, and I have to take one match at a time.

“Luckily I haven't used too much unnecessary energy during the tournament so far. I still think I can play better, which is good. But obviously the matches are going to get harder and harder from now so I have to step up also.

“I mean, I believe, but also you cannot only believe; you have to make it happen. Yeah, time will show.”

Rune will compete for his second Roland Garros quarterfinal against either No. 9 seed Taylor Fritz or No. 29 seed Francisco Cerúndolo on Monday.

Be sure to set your alarm, Holger!
