Serena and Venus Williams purchase stake in Tiger Woods' new golf venture

Fore! The most successful sister act in tennis is now turning its attention to golf. Earlier this week, it was announced that Serena and Venus Williams will join the ownership group of the Los Angeles Golf Club, the first of six teams in the TGL, a new venture by PGA pros Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods and their agency, TMRW Sports.

TGL, also in partnership with the PGA Tour, is expected to launch in 2024. An innovative, virtual golf competition, it will feature six teams of PGA players going head-to-head in 18-hole match play on a virtual course. Matches will be played on Monday nights during the PGA season, with semifinal and final matches eventually crowning the champion.

The sisters will be joined in LAGC ownership by Alexis Ohanian, Serena Williams' husband, their 5-year-old daughter, Alexis Olympian Ohanian, Jr.; and eventually, their second child. The couple announced Williams' pregnancy last month at the Met Gala.

Players who've committed to competing in TGL, in addition to McIlroy and Woods, include Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose and Adam Scott, and the event has scored a star-studded group of investors outside of Ohanian and the Williams sisters, too. NBA players Stephen Curry, Andre Iguodala, Shaquille O'Neal, Dwyane Wade and Kevin Durant; Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton and women's soccer player Alex Morgan; MLB players Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout; Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen; WNBA player Diana Taurasi; and Justin Timberlake are among those who've committed.

“We all know what it’s like to be in a football stadium or a basketball arena where you can watch every play, every minute of action unfold right in front of you,” Woods said upon the announcement of the competition last year, per CNN. “It’s something that inherently isn’t possible in traditional golf–and an aspect of TGL that will set it apart and appeal to a new generation of fans.”

In addition to their newest business venture, more traditional greens were also front and center for the Williams sisters this week: On Tuesday, Venus Williams made her return to WTA tennis for the first time in five months, losing to 17-year-old Swiss player Celine Naef in the first round of the WTA 250 in 's-Hertogenbosch. Serena Williams was among the fans in the crowd cheering her on.
